The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) has announced that Dr. A. A. M. Williams, an associate professor of theatre, will direct the 10th anniversary production of the celebrated musical Black Nativity. This production will take place from December 15 to 17, 2023, at the UWM Theatre, marking a significant milestone in the history of this iconic show.
“This production is not just a celebration of the past; it is an opportunity to explore themes of resilience, hope, and community,”
said Dr. Williams. The musical, originally conceived by playwright Langston Hughes, has become a staple in many theatre repertoires, celebrated for its vibrant storytelling and powerful music that reflect the African American experience during the Christmas season.
In its decade-long run at UWM, Black Nativity has attracted audiences from diverse backgrounds, showcasing local talent and fostering a sense of community engagement. Dr. Williams brings a wealth of experience to the production, having directed various performances that highlight cultural narratives and expand the representation of underrepresented voices in theatre.
The 10th anniversary production promises to feature a cast of talented performers, including both seasoned actors and newcomers. The show will include live music, dance, and a blend of traditional and contemporary elements that aim to resonate with today’s audiences. Dr. Williams emphasized the importance of maintaining the show’s cultural integrity while also infusing it with fresh interpretations that speak to current societal issues.
Tickets for the performances will be available starting November 1, 2023, with special pricing for students and community groups. The UWM Theatre hopes to engage the local community and encourage participation through outreach initiatives, including workshops and discussions related to the themes presented in Black Nativity.
As anticipation builds for this anniversary celebration, the UWM Theatre community looks forward to welcoming both new and returning audiences to experience the magic of Black Nativity. This production not only celebrates a decade of artistic expression but also reaffirms UWM’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and diversity in the arts.
