Sam Smith has announced an extended residency at the newly renovated Castro Theatre in San Francisco, adding excitement for fans and the local community alike. Originally set for eight performances, the Grammy-winning artist’s run has expanded to a total of 20 shows, beginning on February 10, 2024, and concluding on March 14, 2024. The popularity of the residency is evident, as tickets for the newly announced dates on March 13 and March 14 quickly sold out.

The residency, managed by Another Planet Entertainment (APE), marks a significant moment for both the venue and the surrounding LGBTQ community. The Castro Theatre, which will now officially be referred to as The Castro, aims to respect and honor its history within the neighborhood. APE’s decision to feature such a high-profile artist reflects its ambition to establish a strong connection with local residents, some of whom initially expressed skepticism about the company’s management of the venue.

In addition to the performances, Smith is currently engaged in a separate residency titled “To Be Free: NYC” at the Warsaw venue in Brooklyn, which runs through December. To promote the Castro residency, Smith filmed a music video for a cover of Bill Withers‘s classic “Ain’t No Sunshine” in and around the Castro neighborhood. The video, released shortly after the residency announcement, has generated conversations online, particularly regarding its depiction of cigarette smoking.

As excitement builds for the theater’s reopening, APE has yet to announce any other acts following Sam Smith’s residency. The company has indicated that bookings will be available starting in March 2026, but specific details remain under wraps.

Notably, the revival of the Castro Theatre has sparked discussions about the future of two local businesses—Castro Coffee Company and Castro Nail Salon—located in the theater’s retail spaces. APE previously stated intentions to evict these businesses to create new box office facilities. However, pushback from community members and city officials has led to uncertainty regarding these plans. Both businesses remain operational despite ongoing construction related to the theater’s electrical system and reported eviction notices issued in late June.

As the Castro Theatre prepares for its reopening, the local community is engaged in lively discussions about its potential impact on foot traffic and the neighborhood’s character. The anticipation surrounding Sam Smith’s performances adds to the buzz, as both fans and residents look forward to a new chapter for this historic venue.
