A new immersive experience called Himitsu Station has opened in Salt Lake City, offering a fresh take on the traditional escape room. Inspired by Akihabara Station in Japan, the attraction invites participants into an underground world that blends storytelling with interactive challenges.
Redefining Escape Rooms
The experience, which lasts for one hour, follows an original storyline crafted by creator Jaysen Batchelor. Guests find themselves in a train station that serves as a gateway to a mystical realm. As Batchelor explains, “Once you get into the spirit realm, you learn humans haven’t been in the spirit realm for a very long time, and so they’re kind of surprised that you’re there.” To escape, participants must collect items known as soul coins.
Over the past year and a half, the creators have meticulously designed the experience, sourcing authentic props from Japan, local thrift stores, and online marketplaces. Co-owner Destiny Batchelor notes that the project aims to push the boundaries of what an escape room can provide. Unlike traditional setups, there is no countdown clock, allowing for a more relaxed and narrative-driven adventure. “We’re really pushing the boundaries of what you can actually do in the escape room industry by taking away the timer, by adding more story, by adding more when it comes to the environment,” she shared.
A Magical Experience
The name “Himitsu” translates to “secret” in Japanese, reflecting the hidden treasures and unique experiences waiting for visitors. The creators hope to foster an environment where guests can feel enchanted, encouraging them to reconnect with their inner child. “Make them feel like they’re in a magical place where they can relax and let loose and just let that inner child explore and be childlike again,” Destiny Batchelor remarked.
Himitsu Station is open from Thursday to Sunday, welcoming guests to explore this innovative escape room concept. Those interested in learning more can follow their updates on Instagram at @himitsustation.
