Kevin Russell, renowned musician and frontman of the band Shinyribs, has launched a new series called The Hole Story at the iconic Hole in the Wall in Austin, Texas. The series aims to combine live music performances with personal storytelling, allowing artists to share the inspiration and meaning behind their songs. This initiative, taped live at the venue’s intimate front stage, marks an exciting development for both performers and fans alike.
Established in 1974, Hole in the Wall has earned its reputation as one of Austin’s beloved dive bars, serving as a launching pad for countless Texas songwriters. Over the decades, it has hosted notable artists such as Blaze Foley, Lucinda Williams, Spoon, and Gary Clark Jr.. The venue is steeped in musical history, with its walls echoing the sounds of shenanigans, debauchery, and unforgettable music experiences.
Russell’s first performance in this new series coincides with the release of his ninth studio album, Leaving Time, set to debut on April 25, 2025, under Nine Mile Records. The performance featured a selection of songs from his latest album, as well as stories from his childhood and his journey to Austin. Among the tracks played were “One of These Days,” “That and $20,” and “Leaving Louisiana Blues.”
The atmosphere was nostalgic for Russell, who has been a prominent figure in Austin’s music scene since the 1990s, particularly with his previous band, The Gourds. During their regular gigs at Hole in the Wall, the band often drew large crowds, leading to an increase in cover charges from $5 to $7, which sparked playful accusations of “price gouging” from local patrons.
In addition to Russell, the performance featured talented musicians including Keith Langford on drums, Mason Hankamer on bass, Marty Muse on pedal steel and bongos, and Jon Grossman on keys. The event was produced by Deidre Gott with audio engineering handled by Mark Creaney and a skilled team of post-production staff.
As the first installment of The Hole Story unfolds, it promises to offer audiences a unique blend of music and storytelling that highlights the rich tapestry of Austin’s vibrant music culture. The series not only celebrates the artistry of local musicians but also fosters a deeper connection between them and their audience.
Fans of KUTX and music lovers are encouraged to support the station to enhance its ability to bring such engaging content closer to the community. Contributions can be made on their official website. The intersection of music and narrative is set to thrive in this new series, allowing artists like Russell to share their journeys while captivating audiences with live performances.
