The East Tennessee Children’s Hospital has officially been renamed the Dolly Parton Children’s Hospital, a move announced on Thursday by the institution in recognition of the country music legend’s significant contributions to pediatric health care. This change reflects Parton’s ongoing commitment to enhancing health outcomes for children in her home state.
In a heartfelt video announcement, Parton expressed her dedication to supporting children and families in need, stating, “Ever since I’ve been in a position to do my part, to help others, I have tried to do just that. Especially when children and families need it most. I’ve always believed that every child deserves a fair chance to grow up healthy, hopeful and surrounded with love.”
The impact of Parton’s philanthropy is extensive. Her Imagination Library initiative distributes approximately 3 million free books each month to children, fostering literacy and a love for reading from an early age. Additionally, her donation of $1 million to Vanderbilt University Medical Center played a crucial role in the development of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. Parton’s charitable foundation also provides numerous college scholarships and disaster relief efforts.
While the hospital did not disclose the specific amount donated by Parton for the renaming, Matt Schaefer, president and CEO of the hospital, noted that her support would ensure “every child who walks through our doors receives the treatment they deserve.”
The hospital’s chief development and public affairs officer, Adam Cook, emphasized that the institution will maintain its commitment to providing high-quality care, stating, “This is a generational collaboration that will transform pediatric care in this region. It will positively impact patients and families for decades to come.”
This initiative comes at a time when rural hospital closures have left many communities with limited access to health care services. Since its opening in 1937, the East Tennessee Children’s Hospital has operated under an “open-door” policy, ensuring that no child is denied care based on race, religion, or ability to pay. The main campus is located in Knoxville, Tennessee, and the hospital has over 20 locations throughout eastern Tennessee.
Parton expressed her honor in supporting the hospital’s dedicated team of doctors, nurses, and staff. She encouraged the public to join her in this vital mission, saying, “I can’t do it all myself.” Her call to action further underscores the collaborative effort needed to enhance pediatric health care in the region.
The renaming of the hospital marks a significant step in advancing health care for children, uniting Parton’s legacy with a commitment to compassionate care. As the Dolly Parton Children’s Hospital embarks on this new chapter, it aims to uphold its tradition of excellence and inclusivity in pediatric care.
