The acquisition of Hawthorn Books & Literary Arts by the Catapult Book Group marks a significant development in the independent publishing landscape. The deal, finalized in March 2024, comes on the heels of heightened interest in Hawthorn’s memoir, The Chronology of Water, particularly following its adaptation into a film directed by Kristen Stewart. The film premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2023.
Strategic Growth for Catapult
Catapult, known for its eclectic portfolio that includes imprints such as Counterpoint Press and Soft Skull Press, aims to strengthen its offerings with this latest acquisition. Founded by the creators of Electric Literature and Black Balloon Publishing, Catapult operates under the umbrella of Unlikely Collaborators, a nonprofit established by Elizabeth R. Koch. The organization has garnered accolades for its authors, who have received prominent awards including the International Booker Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award.
The film adaptation of The Chronology of Water, based on Lidia Yuknavitch‘s memoir, explores themes of trauma, resilience, and self-discovery. Starring Imogen Poots in the lead role, the film features a cast that includes Jim Belushi, Thora Birch, Charlie Carrick, Susannah Flood, Kim Gordon, and Tom Sturridge. Following its Cannes debut, the film has been sold internationally by Les Films du Losange, with the BFI set to release it in the UK and Ireland, while The Forge will handle its U.S. distribution.
Future Publishing Plans
As part of the acquisition, distribution for Hawthorn Books will transition from Publishers Group West to Penguin Random House, enhancing its market reach. Rhonda Hughes, the founder and Executive Editor of Hawthorn, will remain with the company as Contributing Editor, continuing to acquire titles for the imprint while reporting to Dan Smetanka, the Editorial Director of Catapult. Hughes expressed enthusiasm about the merger, stating, “Having Hawthorn become an imprint alongside such esteemed publishers as Catapult, Counterpoint Press, and Soft Skull Press is both a joy and an honor for me and for our authors.”
This acquisition not only expands Catapult’s catalog but also reinforces its commitment to publishing literature that delves into complex human experiences. Hughes noted that both organizations share a vision for storytelling that resonates on emotional and intellectual levels, promising readers more opportunities to engage with insightful and meaningful writing.
With its first new acquisition scheduled for release in fall 2026, Hawthorn Books is poised to contribute significantly to the evolving landscape of independent literature, ensuring that its legacy of publishing profound narratives continues.
