Built From Crisis Tour Launches in Troy, Celebrating Shawn Maldon

The “Built From Crisis Tour” officially commenced in Troy on October 1, 2023, marking a significant event that united family, friends, educators, and community members in support of local leader Shawn Maldon and his newly released book, Lessons in Leadership, Loyalty & Loss. Despite an initially rainy forecast, the weather improved, allowing attendees to enjoy an afternoon filled with camaraderie and celebration.

Guests gathered in a welcoming atmosphere, which featured engaging conversations and a shared meal, all while expressing their support for Maldon during this meaningful homecoming. The successful launch was the result of meticulous planning by a dedicated host committee led by Sheila Fayson Jackson. She was joined by members including Tonya Terry, Glenda Kelly, Sheila Deveridge, Brandon McClure, and Makelia “Mz FedUp” Wingard, whose collective efforts ensured a memorable event.

Several influential educators from Maldon’s life attended, highlighting the importance of the Troy community in his journey. Señora Pamela Merkel, who taught Maldon Spanish for four years, expressed her pride in his accomplishments and noted the respect he holds for the language and culture. Her presence underscored the lasting impact of strong student-teacher relationships.

Also present was Dr. Linda Felton Smith, the principal during Maldon’s time at Charles Henderson High School. She praised his character and leadership, expressing her pride in his achievements. Additionally, Coach Mike Hogan and his wife, Debbie Hogan, reflected on Maldon’s discipline and work ethic during his high school years, affirming their belief in his future success.

The event featured an engaging interview conducted by Tonya Terry, a former WSFA news anchor. Their discussion delved into the motivations behind Maldon’s book, exploring the lessons learned through challenging experiences. Audience members actively participated by asking questions, fostering an interactive and enriching atmosphere.

A strong representation from St. Paul AME Church, where Maldon’s faith journey began, further highlighted his community roots. Catherine Jordan, speaking on behalf of the church, emphasized the foundational experiences Maldon had within the church community and the accomplishments he achieved there. The presence of church members illustrated the enduring connection between faith, family, and community.

Following the kickoff in Troy, the tour continued on October 3, 2023, in Georgiana, where Mayor Nina Jones Bonner hosted a pop-up book signing at Mary Ruth’s Restaurant. This event was well-received, with community members attending to purchase books, meet Maldon, and enjoy a sense of fellowship. The restaurant owners contributed to the gathering’s success, creating a warm and memorable experience for all involved.
