Utah Residents Can Use SNAP Balances Despite Benefit Cuts
Residents of Utah will be able to use their current SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) balances after November 1, 2023, despite the suspension of new benefits. The Utah Department of Workforce Services confirmed this in an update following the state’s announcement that SNAP payments will not be issued due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.
Impact of Government Shutdown on Benefits
The decision to halt SNAP payments comes as the government shutdown enters its fourth week, affecting numerous households across the state. While new benefits will not be available, individuals with a remaining balance from previous months can still make purchases using their SNAP cards. “If you have a balance in your SNAP account from a prior month, you will be able to make purchases with it after November 1,” the department stated.
Initially, there were concerns that SNAP cards might not function after the deadline, even if they carried a balance. However, the department clarified that this will not be the case, providing some reassurance to those relying on these benefits.
According to data from the Community Action Services and Food Bank (CASFB), over 11,800 households in Utah, Wasatch, and Summit counties will experience disruptions in their SNAP benefits this month. As the community braces for an increase in demand for food assistance, CASFB is actively seeking donations and volunteers to support local efforts. The organization has set a goal of raising 70,000 pounds of food for its pantries and partners by November 1.
Continued Support Through WIC
In contrast to SNAP, the Utah Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program will continue its operations thanks to contingency funding. WIC provides essential nutritional support to pregnant women, new mothers, and young children. This ongoing assistance is crucial during a time when many families are facing uncertainty.
With the potential for increased needs in the community, CASFB emphasizes the importance of local support. Donations can be made through their website, and volunteers are encouraged to help ensure that no one goes hungry during this challenging period.
As the situation evolves, residents are urged to stay informed about available resources and to reach out for assistance if needed. Regardless of the challenges posed by the federal shutdown, the commitment to supporting Utah’s families remains strong.
