St. Louis Offers Free Firewood to Residents This Winter

Residents of St. Louis can obtain free firewood this winter through a new initiative by the City’s Department of Parks, Recreation, and Forestry. This program aims to assist residents during the colder months and is available at select locations while supplies last.

Greg Hayes, the Parks Director, highlighted that the initiative reflects the City’s commitment to sustainability. The firewood is sourced from city tree removal operations, with logs being dropped off at designated sites in the afternoons, Monday through Friday.

The specific locations for firewood collection include the lower Muny Opera Parking Lot in Forest Park, near the compost area off Holly Hills Drive in Carondelet Park, and north of Picnic Site #4 in O’Fallon Park. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity, as the program is first-come, first-served.

While the firewood is free, it is important to note that commercial vehicles or trailers are not permitted at the collection sites. The distribution will continue through early March 2026, depending on supply availability.

Residents seeking more information can contact the Forestry Division at (314) 613-7200. This initiative not only provides a valuable resource during winter but also underscores the city’s efforts to promote environmental sustainability through responsible management of natural resources.
