Bay Ridge Launches Holiday Season with Third Avenue Tree Lighting

The holiday season in Bay Ridge officially commenced with the annual tree-lighting ceremony hosted by the Merchants of Third Avenue Civic Improvement Association Inc. on December 4, 2023. The event drew a crowd of residents and families who gathered at The Corner on Third Avenue at 18:30 to witness the dazzling illumination of a towering evergreen adorned with multicolored lights.

As the tree flickered to life, the festive atmosphere enveloped the neighborhood. Children engaged in arts and crafts activities, while others enjoyed face painting, adding a delightful touch to the celebration. The event featured a carol performance by students from Xavierian High School, enhancing the holiday spirit with seasonal melodies.

Shirley Chin, the coordinator and director of the tree lighting, addressed the attendees, expressing gratitude for the community’s support. “Tonight we celebrate the spirit with music, arts and crafts, and of course the lighting of our Christmas tree,” she emphasized, thanking all friends, family, and neighbors who contributed to the event’s success.

The ceremony not only marks the beginning of the festive season but also highlights local traditions. James Vavas, president of the Merchants of Third Avenue, acknowledged the support of elected officials present at the event. Among them were Assembly Member Alec Brook-Krasny and Council Member Justin Brannan, alongside Council Member-elect Kayla Santosuosso.

“This is a great tradition — I’m super proud to be here and to have served as your councilman for the past eight years,” Brannan stated, gesturing toward Santosuosso, who will continue to uphold these cherished local customs.

The tree-lighting ceremony has become a beloved event in Bay Ridge, drawing a modest but enthusiastic crowd each year. It signifies not just the onset of the holiday season, but also a moment for the community to come together in celebration.

For those interested in other festive events, a list of additional tree lightings throughout Brooklyn is available for community members looking to extend their holiday cheer.
