The iconic Bridgewater Commons in Somerset County, New Jersey, is set to undergo a significant interior redesign, enhancing the shopping experience for visitors. The mall, which first opened its doors in February 1988, will see renovations completed by spring 2026. The new owners, Pacific Retail Capital Partners, are committed to revitalizing the space with modern designs and an updated food court.
Spanning 1.2 million square feet, Bridgewater Commons has evolved over the years to include a diverse range of shops and eateries. Recent additions to the mall include popular brands such as Kendra Scott, Miniso, and Pop Mart, alongside restaurants like Fogo de Chão and franchises such as Big Chicken, owned by NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal. The mall’s layout now also features “The Village at Bridgewater Commons,” an open-air section that hosts local businesses including Athletifreak, Face Foundrié, Millburn Deli, and DIG.
Redesign Focuses on Modern Aesthetics and Family-Friendly Spaces
The renovation plans aim to create a more inviting atmosphere with light, bright colors and modern art installations throughout the mall. The food court will be reorganized to enhance dining experiences, introducing updated seating areas that include a lounge and a designated “little lounge” space designed for families. This transformation seeks to align with the preferences of a new generation of consumers.
In a statement, Annmarie Plenge, Chief Creative Officer of Pacific Retail Capital Partners, emphasized the mall’s role as a leading retail center in Somerset County. “Bridgewater Commons has continued to strengthen its place as the dominant retail center for Somerset County,” she noted. The company’s portfolio also includes other notable properties such as District Galleria in White Plains, New York, and Queen Kaʻahumanu Center in Maui, Hawaii.
Embracing Nostalgia While Looking to the Future
As the mall approaches its 35th anniversary, it reflects on a rich history while adapting to contemporary trends. The resurgence of 1990s styles in retail provides an opportunity to revisit the nostalgia associated with shopping experiences from that era. This renovation is not just about aesthetics; it also represents a strategic move to ensure that Bridgewater Commons remains relevant in a rapidly changing retail landscape.
With over 150 brands currently operating within its walls, including major retailers like Apple, Lululemon, and Pottery Barn, Bridgewater Commons is poised to emerge as a refreshed shopping destination. The planned enhancements signal a commitment to elevating the consumer experience, making the mall a central hub for both local residents and visitors alike.
As the construction progresses, shoppers can expect a vibrant and modernized space that honors the legacy of this long-standing Somerset County landmark while embracing the future of retail.
