Michigan Teacher Brandon Bailey Wins Excellence in Education Award

A fifth-grade teacher from Cadillac, Michigan, has been recognized for his exceptional contributions to education. Brandon Bailey, who teaches math and science at Forest View Elementary, received the Michigan Lottery Excellence in Education award, which includes a cash prize of $2,000 and eligibility for the prestigious $10,000 Educator of the Year award.

Bailey’s teaching philosophy emphasizes hands-on learning and building strong relationships with his students. He has been an educator for over two decades, dedicating the last eight years to Forest View. His approach aims to engage students actively in their learning process. “I love to teach. I am passionate about it,” Bailey stated. “I wanted to put the learning in the hands of the students and watch them learn from the doing of whatever they are learning.”

The award is part of a program established by the Michigan Lottery in 2014 to acknowledge outstanding public school educators across the state. Bailey was nominated by Heidi Collins, a parent who highlighted his ability to foster a supportive and positive classroom environment. “Mr. Bailey goes above and beyond helping students surpass their expectations academically, as well as positively impacting their character, social skills, and emotional development,” Collins noted.

Bailey found the nomination particularly meaningful, as it reflected the rapport he developed with Collins’ son, who joined his class mid-year. They connected over shared interests, including fishing and hockey. “We talked about his activities — he’s into hockey. It resonated with his mom, so she nominated me,” he recounted.

The recognition has garnered praise from school officials. Jake Wing, Principal of Forest View Elementary, asserted that awards like these shine a light on the daily efforts of educators that often go unnoticed. “There are wins every day in classrooms that people don’t always see,” he remarked.

Superintendent Jennifer Brown emphasized Bailey’s significant impact on both student performance and classroom culture. “The historic student growth achieved in his classroom is not accidental. It reflects a standard Brandon set for himself through hard work, intentional planning, and a relentless focus on rigorous learning,” she said. Brown added that Bailey’s dedication enriches the entire school district.

Bailey holds a bachelor’s degree from Aquinas College and a master’s degree from Nova Southeastern University. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he also coaches the high school girls’ golf team. The Excellence in Education nominees are evaluated on criteria such as excellence, dedication, inspiration, leadership, and effectiveness in advancing student achievement.

This award not only highlights Bailey’s contributions but also serves as a reminder of the pivotal role educators play in shaping the lives of their students.
